It’s time to ratchet back on my activity. As such, I’ve made some decisions going into next year. I will be giving up my psychology license as of December 31st, along with my contracts with insurance companies. Essentially, I want to back off on the clinical work and the hassles that accompany licensing and insurance demands. My partner, Penny Giesbrecht, and I have recently sold our office condominium as part of our retirement from in-person clinical work. There will be a limited opportunity to see me as a “parent coach” on a private pay basis; this will not be my primary emphasis in 2027.
My New Emphasis:
- Training other professionals to see clients who wish to use health insurance. The model I have developed to work with parents of young adults has been very successful and satisfying for me, and I want to share this with other professionals who want to work with parents and young adults. On October 23rd, I will be delivering a three-hour training session for professionals who want to use my methodology. Midwest Mental Health Solutions will be offering this. It will also be open to parents, youth workers, and other interested parties.
- In support of those attending the workshop who want to use my methodology, I will provide additional materials, including assessment tools and a monthly consultation session where attendees can bring their cases and we can share learnings. What I have done is a work in progress, and the future is, too, so we will learn from each other and refine the approach.
- I will continue to develop materials, write blog posts, appear on guest podcasts, update my website, and communicate with people on my distribution lists and social media.
I Need Your Involvement:
- Professionals who want to adopt my approach and attend the October 23rd training sessions: let me know of your interest so I can be sure you get the details – see below. More information on this will come out in September.
- Recently, I have had parents ask me if I know of a support group for parents of young adults. Since I am not aware of any such program for parents in Minnesota, I will be initiating a virtual (ZOOM) support or mutual-help group this fall. Although I would be part of starting it, I would like this to be parent-run eventually. The group would be structured around the six practices that parents need to strengthen to launch their adult kids successfully. Contact me at the email below if you are interested in such a group.
- My work is mission-driven and not motivated by profit or any return on investment other than helping parents who are struggling with their kids. As such, I would like to ask for help with further development of this mission. If anyone is interested in helping foster this work through marketing and promotional efforts, please get in touch with me. I am looking for 5-10 hours a week, have a job description, and am willing to consider compensation in the range of $20-$25 an hour. So, if you have a communications or marketing background and are interested, please let me know.
If interested in attending the training referenced above, participating in the support group concept, or considering helping with marketing and communications, contact me at drjackstoltzfus@gmail.com.
