Recent Parent Survey Highlights and Lessons Learned Webinar for Parents
On June 23rd from 6:00-7:30 PM CDT, I will be providing a Zoom webinar for parents. Invitations are going out to former and current clients, workshop participants, and my friends and family mailing list, as well as announcements on my social media.
I have had the privilege of working with many families on the launch process over the last ten-plus years, and they have been my teachers. I’ve discovered some very interesting commonalities between parents of young adults and their adult children that enable both parties to get on the same page and work together. I want to share these insights with you, as well as the results of the survey of parents completed earlier this year.
I will set up a gallery view so we can see each other, but you can attend anonymously with just your first name and block the video feed if that would be more comfortable. I think one of the side benefits of doing these webinars for parents is that you see you are not alone and can learn from each other. There will be an opportunity for participants to ask questions in the last half hour. I get a little nervous about the technology challenges, but I have done this one other time, and it went well. If any of you have experience with this type of webinar and would like to host it or help me with it, I would welcome it.
One interesting finding from the survey is a little disappointing to me. One way parents hang on and undermine the launch process is by believing they are responsible for their adult child’s success and happiness. If a parent is responsible for the success and happiness of their adult child, then the adult child isn’t responsible. We are always parents, but at some point, we need to let go and let our kids take responsibility for their lives.
